Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a lawyer?

I am pleased to provide a 30-minute consultation to discuss whether a lawyer may be needed to address the problem posed by a client.

How will I be charged for your services? What are your fees?

In most cases, I will ask you to sign a Retainer Agreement to summarize the legal services to be provided and my hourly rate. However, a flat fee may be charged depending on the service provided, including real estate transactions, wills and powers of attorney, marriage contracts and separation agreements. A contingency fee likely will be charged for personal injury litigation.

What forms of payment do you accept?

I accept e-transfers, cash, cheques, bank drafts and debit and credit cards.

What do I bring to our first meeting?

What may be necessary at our first meeting may be discussed during an initial telephone call or specified in an email.

What is my role or responsibilities as a client?

You understand the importance of giving me all the facts and of being totally honest with me. I can only do my best job if I have your trust and am fully informed. In particular, I ask you to give me all information and documents you have, or have access to, which could help me in working on your case.

How will you communicate with me about my case?

I will keep you advised of the status of the case by telephone, email, in-person meetings or Zoom video, whichever is appropriate in the circumstances.

Is the information I provide confidential?

I must share relevant information about your case with the defendant’s lawyer and the court, if applicable. But unless I need to share this information as part of my work, all information you give me will be kept confidential between us.

Should I contact you before agreeing to purchase or sell a property?

An Agreement of Purchase and Sale typically is prepared by the listing real estate agent on behalf of a buyer. I recommend that a seller contact me to review the Agreement of Purchase and Sale to confirm crucial aspects of the transaction, including any conditions and which party is responsible to pay the HST, if any.
